Yes, no.ambition is right. Forget this one, go for that one:http://www.discogs.com/Various-1-2-3-4-Punk-New-Wave-1976-1979/release/1388773for it contains the original tracks (and a good booklet). CRASS ( http://www.discogs.com/artist/Crass ) are missing on both compilations, as do a lot of American artists, but I'm more into the British stuff. And a punk compilation without the Ramones is U_N_T_H_I_N_K_A_B_L_E !GvH

The entire history of punk? What a pretentious title! Or is it meant as a joke? Well, I don’t get it...The complete box set contains remarkable 304 tracks on 20 CDs! You can at least expect that it’s getting near close to what the title is promising. I would expected a well considered mixture of all time classics, hits, key tracks and some slept on stuff.Unfortunately that’s not the case here: I have to admit you will find some classics, but be careful: Half of those are damn annoying and uncredited live recordings! Some are redone versions by others or solo artists and the rest of the tracks are fillers or 2nd choice. And there are too many bands from other styles like Oi!, New Wave, Ska, Rockabilly and stuff, somehow related styles indeed, but simply too many!Aware of the fact that punk started in NYC, the US Punks are way too underrepresented. There are just a few artists like the Dead Kennedys, Johnny Thunders and Iggy Pop. Where are Ramones? Where are Misfits? Where are The Dickies? Where are The Dead Boys? Where are Germs? Where are The Wipers? Where is Black Flag? Well, check the cover you say, it shows the Union Jack, that’s why it concentrates on the UK. Speaking of the UK: Where is The Clash? Where are Buzzcocks? Where is Generation X (4)? Where is Discharge? And these are just some of the obvious ones!If a label does not have the money to put together a quality compilation, then just don’t do it instead of releasing this barefaced cheating on your customers. While writing this I become more and more aware that it doesn’t even deserve 2 points! It's a bluff package!Enough ranting. For all the kids who are interested in 1970s punk I’d rather recommend these compilations: Various - 1-2-3-4 Punk & New Wave 1976-1979 or maybe even better: Various - No Thanks! The '70s Punk Rebellion released by Rhino Records which has released a bunch of premium compilations. Various - If The Kids Are United: The Punk Box Set is mainly about UK punk including the 80s. Various - Do The Pop! Redux Part One is a good one, if you’re interested in early australien punk. A fine introduction to american hardcore is Various - American Hardcore: The History Of American Punk Rock 1980-1986.And if you’re into reading check out the book "Please Kill Me" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain which concentrates on the early roots of punk in america and follows its traces from the likes of The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, The Dictators, the eponymous Punk magazine, the Bowery Scene with the CBGB's and Max's Kansas City, Ramones and finally Malcolm McLaren who brought it to the UK and made a fashion spectacle out of it.

I do agree with No.Ambition's review. This box is missing too many essential artists! That is one of the reasons I removed it from a recommendation list. A mostly, missed opportunity to release a worthwhile collection with historical value!
